Service Description

Master Weaver & Diarist Sandra Haynes will show how she uses book binding to incorporate and preserve a variety textiles from her life in her diary. She covers books not only with her handwoven fabrics but also commercial swatches from her time as jacquard designer, and embellished bits of her family's favorite worn-out clothing. She will explain how, though the nomenclature of bookbinding is different than weaving, many binding techniques are simple tapestry weaving with lots of paper added in. She will show a unique flexible binding she developed so weaving samples sewn onto book pages will not distort the book's spine structure. (No more ugly plastic binders but much less organized.)  After finishing her Master Weaver's Certificate from the Hill Institute in 1994 Sandra moved to North Carolina and worked as an industry hand sample weaver and jacquard upholstery designer until the majority of the commercial weaving mills in the Southeast closed. She continued to pursue fiber arts, adapting textile techniques to a variety of mediums including jewelry, sculpture and installation art.
